Become a trustee for The Fostering Network

We are looking for three new Board members to join our committed Board of Trustees at an exciting time following the launch of our new strategy and election of a new Chair of Trustees in 2025.

The Fostering Network is the UK’s leading fostering charity and membership organisation. We were founded 50 years ago by foster carers, for foster carers, and our access to governments and policy makers in all four nations of the United Kingdom gives us an unrivalled ability to lead the change necessary to make foster care the best it can be.

We believe that relationships are the golden thread running through every fostering story and are dedicated to supporting, enriching, empowering and, where necessary, restoring the vital bonds between those who work together to offer love, warmth, stability and hope to children and young people.

Our vision is for a vibrant fostering community across the UK to work together so every child and young person has the chance to flourish.

Who we are looking for

You will be someone who has personal experience of the foster care sector, can demonstrate strategic vision, sound judgement and has the energy and enthusiasm to help The Fostering Network achieve its goals.

You will have the willingness and capacity to devote the necessary time to being a member of the Board including diarised meetings, both in person and online and, where appropriate, be available for ad hoc advice and enquiries. Commitment to our vision, mission and objectives is essential, as well as an ability to respect confidences and build meaningful relationships with a range of stakeholders.

To enable us to ensure our Board is representative of our membership, we are particularly, though not exclusively, interested in candidates who are:

  • Based in Wales or Northern Ireland
  • Qualified social workers working in a fostering service

Board Meeting

We are also particularly interested in candidates who possess skills and experience in finance (particularly qualified accountants) and commercial business development.

These are volunteer roles appointed for 3 years and renewable for an additional 2 terms. While the roles are unpaid, travel expenses will be reimbursed. Board meetings are held four times per year in person with additional committee meetings held four times per year online. It is expected that all trustees will attend at least one Board meeting in person per year, with greater in-person attendance desired.

Vetting will be carried out for all successful candidates including relevant disclosure checks and references.

Our strategy for the next five years

Our strategy outlines The Fostering Network’s goals and values for the next five years, ensuring that children and foster carers remain at the centre of children’s social care reform and clearly setting out how we will achieve meaningful change.

  • Be the catalyst for child-centred change
  • Secure sustainable income through meaningful relationships
  • Increase the impact of our work
  • Influence transformational policy change
  • Drive forward quality improvement in practice

Trustee

As a trustee, you’re plugged directly into the conversations with MPs, local authority directors, and independent fostering agencies. It’s an incredible opportunity to make sure carers’ voices shape the future of fostering.

Trustee

You’re in a room with like-minded people, you learn so much, and yes, there’s laughter too. But underneath it all is the knowledge that you’re doing something worthwhile that really matters – making sure foster carers and their families are represented by those who experience firsthand the challenges and joys of fostering.
