Welsh Government have been consulting on the 'Part 6 code of practice 2025 on looked after and accommodated children' which includes proposals for a new corporate parenting chapter within the code.
They are consulting on a number of ways to improve corporate parenting for children after introducing their corporate parenting charter two years ago, which we have signed up to. We worked with members of our youth advisory board to gather their views on the proposals.
Welsh Government want to introduce better ways to monitor how corporate parenting duties are carried out, ensure young people’s voices can be a more integral part of these and a new term “community parenting” which would make it clearer who has signed up to the charter but doesn’t have a legal responsibility as a corporate parent.
The consultation also states that they will include NYAS’s “My Things Matter” campaign pledge in their new Code of Practice, a campaign the young people have been supporting. The pledge states that local authorities should ensure that children’s belongings are never moved in bin bags and ensures their things are moved with dignity and respect as part of their partnership with Madlug holdall bags.
