In June, the government opened a consultation on modernising and improving the administration of council tax in England. The consultation sets out the government’s proposals to review council tax disregards or exemptions. We responded to the consultation as part of our #CostofFostering campaign, asking the Government to include foster carers within the new disregards, meaning all foster carers in England would be exempt from paying council tax.
In our response we highlighted the recruitment and retention benefits providing foster carers with council tax exemptions brings and gave examples of local authorities who already do this. We also highlighted that it would contribute to foster carers feeling more respected and valued by the Government and their local authority as it would be a tangible demonstration of the importance of the vital care-giving role.
