Celebrating Black History Month

Join us as we celebrate Black History Month with a special event exploring the experiences, voices and perspectives of Black children, young people and adults with experience of the care system.

Through lived experience, professional insight and open discussion, this event will consider how we can better understand the experiences of Black children and young people in foster care, and how foster carers and fostering services can provide culturally informed, thoughtful and effective support.

We will be joined by a range of speakers who will share their personal and professional experiences, including foster carers supporting young people of colour in care.

Meet our speakers

Judith Denton

Judith is the founder of The Black Care Experience, established in 2021 to help shape a better care experience for Black children and young people within the children’s social care system.

Having entered foster care at the age of nine, Judith draws on her own experiences of the care system and life as a care-experienced adult to advocate for change and inspire others.

She is also CEO and Founder of The Transformed You, an intervention and support mentoring service established in 2013 to transform lives and raise the aspirations of children and young people in care and care leavers.

Today, Judith works as a speaker, trainer, coach, consultant and author. Her work includes her autobiography Foster Care and Me, The Foster Carers SuperPowers and the six-part documentary series From Foster Care to Role Model.

Chantelle Lunt

We will also welcome Chantelle Lunt, who has a professional background in policing and children’s social care.

Chantelle is Chair of Merseyside Alliance for Racial Equality CIC (MARE) and a Knowsley Borough Councillor, making history as the first Black woman elected to both positions.

With a strong commitment to social justice, her work spans political, academic and activist spaces, advocating for meaningful change across education, policing and racial equality.

Hearing from foster carers

The event will also include contributions from foster carers sharing their experiences of supporting children and young people of colour in care.

Their perspectives will help explore the practical realities of providing culturally responsive care, supporting identity and belonging, and creating environments in which children and young people feel understood, respected and valued.

Why attend?

This event offers an opportunity to listen, learn and reflect on the experiences of Black children and young people in care, hear directly from people with lived and professional experience, and consider what good support can look like in fostering practice.

Whether you are a foster carer, social worker, fostering service professional or work alongside children and families, we hope you will join us for this important Black History Month conversation.

Join us for this webinar exploring ways to support and nurture cultural identity within fostering.
